Creative Arts

Studio Art

The Hague School’s studio arts program is designed and led by experienced working artist-teachers who are exhibited in museums and galleries across the United States, Europe, and South America. Students in lower grades experiment with techniques in drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, sculpture, and design, and engage in the critique process. Through exploration and critique, by 11th grade, students are prepared for IB Visual Art, a self-directed course with strong guidance from an experienced artist in which students learn a variety of techniques, both two- and three-dimensional. These include glass casting, plaster, clay, cloth, design prototypes, cyanotypes, painting, drawing, woodblocks, screen-printing, and more.

Filmmaking & Photography

Students in photography learn the basics of lighting, framing, angle, and digital editing. Filmmaking classes offer students a chance to collaborate on creative projects under the guidance of a master filmmaker, writing screenplays and directing original films.

Multimedia Production & Graphic Design

Elective art courses allow students to collaborate with faculty to shape courses in multimedia production and design that will give them hands-on skills they can apply to core courses such as podcasting, web design, digital drawing, animation, and graphic design.

Theater & Performance

The Hague School is partnered with Norfolk’s Generic Theater to provide students with training and support from professional actors, directors, costume designers, and set builders. Our 120-year-old auditorium is perfectly designed to carry acoustics for vocal performances, speeches, debates, and dramatic productions. In 2023, The Hague School’s drama club produced Samuel Beckett’s tragi-comedy Waiting for Gadot, and students of all grades performed original scenes from literature adapted for the stage during the THS Spring Arts Festival.

Music

Music classes at The Hague School infuse scholarship with the freedom and joy of live performance, encompassing a variety of genres and styles. From ancient to contemporary instrumentation and composition, students examine the development of music from a historical and cultural perspective.
